SFVA Echocardiography
The SFVAHCS Echocardiography Laboratory performs an average of 2500 inpatient and outpatient imaging studies annually including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms using contrast and three-dimensional imaging.
Echocardiography is performed by experienced cardiac sonographers who perform image acquisition using GE ultrasound machines. Studies are interpreted by UCSF cardiology faculty who are experts in clinical echocardiography, conduct echocardiography research and are skilled teachers. We support our interventional and surgical colleagues in management of patients with complex valvular disease. We assist in planning for and provide procedural support for transcatheter therapies for aortic and mitral valve disease including transcutaneous aortic valve replacement, transcutaneous mitral valve repair, paravalvular leak closure, and atrial septal defect closure. UCSF cardiology fellows and UCSF medical students rotate through our laboratory to obtain formal education in echocardiography image acquisition and interpretation.
